Betsy DeVos: Philanthropy to Initiate Postive Social Changes

Betsy DeVos is known to many as a reformer. She has been lauded for her ingenious solutions to social problems in business and politics. In my research of Mrs. Devos, I discovered that although many people are cognizant of her role in educational reforms, some individuals are unaware of her generous philanthropic giving. Mrs. DeVos and her husband, Dick DeVos, have a family foundation which she co-chairs with her husband. The Foundation oversees their philanthropic work.

My inquiry into Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, reveals a generous foundation that has funded many organizations. These organizations include institutions of higher learning, legal groups, schools, conservative organizations, as well as Christian-based education groups. Mrs. DeVos and her extended family have had a culture of donating for a long period. Their philanthropic efforts have earned the family opportunities to influence political agenda, which they have utilized positively.The DeVos are ranked among the largest donors in the country.

I found out that in 2015, Success Academy Charter Schools was awarded $150,000 by the Dick and Betsy Foundation, with another $150,000 in differed payment to the same institution. During the same period, the DeVos’ extended a funding of $ 750,000 to a Washington Dc based think tank with a promise to provide an additional $1,000,000 to the think tank in future. Many institutions of higher learning have benefited from the DeVos’ unparalleled giving; an example is the University of Maryland College Park Foundation which received over $500,000 from the foundation. Ferris University, Davenport University, Rollins College, Calvin College are all beneficiaries of the DeVo’s Foundation. Support for healthcare and art is also on the agenda of the Dick and Betsy Foundation.

Betsy DeVos currently serves as the Secretary of education in President Donald Trump’s administration. Her sustained efforts towards the education sector are likely to inform her policy action in her current role. Mrs. DeVos belongs to the Republican Party and has served in different capacities in the party. She served as the Michigan Republican Committeewoman between 1992 and 1997. Mrs. DeVos’ other notable role is her chairing of the Michigan Republican Party from 1996 to 2003.
